很多同学在准备四六级、考研、托福雅思、专四专八等国内外英语考试时都陷入了一个误区：盲目追求所谓的「高级词汇」、「高分词汇」，不顾单词的使用范围和语境胡乱套用，写出的文章要么错误百出，要么十分生硬，甚至是不知所云。
接下来一段时间，我会再次重启这个专栏，精选一些外刊高频使用的地道、实用、易上手的小词，带大家体会《经济学人》如何通过灵活运用这些小词写出漂亮的文章，教大家如何将消极词汇转换为积极词汇。
经常读外刊的同学一定会对distress这个词非常眼熟了，今天我们来系统地讲一讲它的用法。
1️⃣表示「忧虑，悲伤，痛苦」这种情绪 (a feeling of extreme unhappiness)。
比如《经济学人》一篇关于家暴的文章有这样一句话：
Abused women report more emotional distress and higher rates of depression. They are more likely to consider or attempt suicide. 遭虐待的女性情绪压力更大，更易患抑郁症。她们考虑或试图自杀的几率更高。
Did he ever intentionally inflict emotional distress?
✏️总结：distress ≈ pain
✏️总结：distress ≈ trouble, hardship
3️⃣ 表示船、飞机等「遇难，遇险」。
The ship is in distress.船遇险了。
《经济学人》一篇关于北斗导航系统的文章也用到了这个词：
The third phase provides global coverage. It also affords more accuracy, and allows users to send short text messages and distress signals.
在第三阶段，北斗系统覆盖了全球，定位更为精准，并允许用户通过系统发送短信和求救信号。
1️⃣ 表示「悲痛，苦恼」(having a feeling of extreme unhappiness)。
比如英剧《南方与北方》里有这样一句话：
Only, one of my mother's servants was engaged to him. She's in great distress today.
✏️总结：be in distress ≈ be in pain
✏️ 总结：be in distress ≈ be in poverty, be in trouble
3️⃣ 表示「遭遇危险，遇难」(in danger or difficulty and needing help)。
英语中有一个习语 a damsel in distress，便是指「落难女子」。
distress也可作动词，指「使...忧虑，使...悲伤，使...苦恼」(to make sb feel very worried or unhappy)。
举个英剧《爱玛》里的例子：
Do not distress yourself. Do not trouble yourself on my part.
句中vex为动词，指「使...恼火，使...烦恼」(to annoy or worry sb)。
1️⃣ distressed 为形容词，指「烦恼的，忧虑的」(upset and anxious)。
