In 1959, on the outskirts of Xi'an, Northwest China's Shaanxi province, archaeologists discovered a piece of uniquely-shaped pottery in an ancient tomb.
This 1300-year-old cultural relic is a Sancai (three-colors) pottery figurine of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). This rare art treasure is full of artistic attraction and imagination. It is collected in the Shaanxi History Museum.
Tang Sancai is a low-melting glazed pottery that flourished in the Tang Dynasty. During the production, different metallic oxides were added to the colored glazes. So, after firing, the pottery would reveal intermingled colors, mainly yellow, green and white, hence its name “Sancai (three-colors)”.
