Do you want to learn more about the history of the United States? Join a prominent American historian at the Beijing American Center for a series of informative and engaging talks. 

Session 7: Breaking the Chain: Abolitionism and Early Reform Movements in America, 1800-1851 

Friday, Mar 31, 2023, 3:00-4:30p.m. 

The years before the American Civil War were some of the most challenging times in U.S. history. This session will explore the conflict between those who sought to abolish slavery and the resistance by others who wanted to expand slavery into new territories in North America.  

We'll discuss how slavery shaped social and economic relations in the "Old South" and discover the legal and material constraints on enslaved people's lives and work. We will also examine how family, gender, religion, and values combined to create a distinct slave culture and 19th-century resistance to slavery. We will consider how abolitionism challenged barriers to racial equality and free speech and discuss the early years of the women's rights movement and its significance for the ongoing struggle to achieve gender equality in the United States. 

This event will be conducted in English.
