Chanting the Wintersweet

In the Tune of Diviner

Qu Qiubai

In this world she is all alone,

So free and happy on her own.

When the clouds and mist are past, her eyes gone;

Just free and at ease she plays on.

Flowers wither but spring does remain;

Let them sway, slashing wind and rain.

Spring is sure to come again the next year;

Her scent will breathe as usual here.

猛勇的奋斗着;

A Victory

Deng Zhongxia

Are there brambles that we cannot sweep?

Are there jackals and tigers that we cannot kill?

Are there mountains that we cannot topple?

You only need fight, fight a valiant fight!

Struggle along, continue to struggle along

To you victories belong!

To you victories belong!

The Youth

Cai Hesen

On the land dragons and snakes rise,

A youth standing twixt earth and skies.

So molested is his domain;

The warship starts in wind and rain.

In chaos one need play his role;

To learn I have hardened my soul.

I’ll learn ten thousand miles away;

With friends, literati, I’ll stay.

To restore our great motherland,

All hardship I’ll keep under hand.

My faithful heart does me guide

To strive on with national pride.

Although I have no spear to wave,

From pains our country I can save.

In the boat I judge how things are

And will arouse all near and far.

All heroes gather in Long Sand

And Lake Cavehall’s waters expand.

In the Jail

Yun Daiying

Wandering the world, my friends I recall;

Each has his merits, should he stand or fall.

It’s all common, be I worried or ailed;

I’ll be full of pride even if I’m jailed.

In the Tune of Pure Peace Tune

Zhang Tailei

In Changzhou born was I,

In Late Qing, sunk from a house high.

Mum worked as a servant after Dad died;

For Beijing Univ. I applied.

Against imperialists I dashed out;

In the uprising blood splashed about.

Lightning flashed and thunder rolled ahead;

To reform the world, we held flags red.

可是久已做了外国人的军港;

东望望罢,那里是被压迫的高丽;

南望望罢,那里是受欺凌的印度;

做唤醒同胞迷梦之号呼;

易水萧萧啊,壮士吞仇敌;

燕山巍巍啊,吓退匈奴夷;

寒风凛冽啊,吹我衣;

黄花低头啊,暗无语;

Mourning China

Jiang Guangci

My mournful China!

My mournful China!

You did own a nature of beauty unbound;

Your image so vast, majestic and profound!

On your body flow many rivers serpentine;

On your body tower many mountains that with green align.

But now,

The rivers flow with sobs so sad and keen;

The mountains look bleak, few and far between!

All over the land foreign flags flow far and wide;

All over the land foreigners with arrogance strut and stride!

Aren’t Lvshun and Dalian places under China?

But for long they have been foreign ports fortified.

Isn't the French Garden a place under China?

But no people in Chinese clothes can come inside.

Oh you! Chinese are slaves!

Why do you so willingly yield?

Why do you droop like this, so depressed?

Beacon-fire and smoke over every field,

Everywhere, painful scenes, so distressed!

Devilish warlords, each other you fight;

The wretched masses are not worthy, so slight!

The despicable politicians just hanker for their own right;

Who cares about the loss of the rivers and mountains so bright?

Friends, it’s heart-rending, dampening like this;

My mournful China!

When can you jump out of this dark abyss?

Behold east, that is Korea oppressed;

Behold south, that is India suppressed.

Oh, you! A conquered nation I cannot tell at all!

I’m care-laden China will for ever decline to fall.

I would run to the top of Mt. Queen

To shout to wake up my compatriots from their dream,

I would pour out the waves of the east ocean

To wash the lazy bones of our Chinese nation.

Me, oh, I feel ashamed with the age-long silence of sorrow;

O the Yi River does sough, the hero would the enemy swallow.

O Mt. Yan does tower, and the Huns cower;

How many heroic deeds in the past,

The Chinese nation had her resistant power.

But now it’s dead silence all over the land,

All willing to be slaves held under hand.

Oh, you! I’m a Chinese,

For China’s destiny I would sing high;

And for the Chinese nation I relieve a long sigh.

Ah, the cold sough, blowing my clothes;

The yellow flowers bend their heads, speechless.

I’m a poet in vain today,

I feel so ashamed I could not defend our land;

Byron, ashamed for Greece, did there die

And today for China I will cry.

Oh, you! My mournful China!

I don’t believe you will for ever sink in devastation;

I don’t believe you will never have your rejuvenation.
