2月5日，台湾佛光山开山宗长、国际佛光会创办人星云大师在高雄圆寂。星云大师毕生致力于弘扬人间佛教，积极推动两岸佛教交流交往。
Hsing Yun, founder of Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and an influential monk who died at the age of 96 on Sunday, had played an irreplaceable role in promoting peace and reunification across the Taiwan Straits.
他一生写照，诚如他自撰之诗偈：“心怀度众慈悲愿，身似法海不系舟；问我一生何所求，平安幸福照五洲。”
释星云，俗名李国深，法号悟彻，其信徒常称之为星云大师，1927年出生于江苏扬州的一个穷苦家庭。
1937年，由于父亲在南京沦陷后音信全无，星云便跟随母亲到南京来寻找父亲，曾目睹南京大屠杀惨状。在此期间，他去到了南京栖霞寺并对佛教产生兴趣，于是在12岁时于栖霞寺出家做了和尚。1947年，星云从焦山佛学院毕业，两年后移居台湾。
1967年，星云大师在高雄创立了佛光山，旨在弘扬人间佛教的原则，促进世界各国人民的和平与和谐。
Hsing Yun was born as Li Guoshen in 1927 to a poor family in Jiangsu province. At the age of 12, after traveling with his mother to Nanjing in an unsuccessful attempt to find his father, he visited the city's Qixia Temple and became interested in Buddhism.
After taking his religious vows, he later graduated from Jiaoshan Buddhist Seminary in 1947. He then moved to Taiwan in 1949.
In 1967 in Kaohsiung, Hsing Yun founded Fo Guang Shan as a monastery with the purpose of promoting the principles of Humanistic Buddhism and fostering peace and harmony among all peoples of the world.

星云大师不仅致力于人间佛教理念的弘扬与实践，还为促进两岸交流与和平统一发挥了不可替代的作用。
北京联合大学台湾研究院两岸研究所所长朱松岭表示，星云大师一直希望看到世界和平，两岸和平发展和统一是他最大的心愿，他也一直在用自己的行动来宣传他的信仰并影响他人。
Besides his great achievements in practicing Buddhism, Hsing Yun had also played an irreplaceable role in promoting cross-Straits exchanges and peaceful reunification, Zhu Songling, a professor on Taiwan studies from Beijing Union University, said on Monday.
"He always hoped to see peace around the world, and peaceful cross-Straits development and reunification are important parts of his wish. Furthermore, he had been using his actions to promote what he believes in and influence others," Zhu said.
2000年以来，他于江苏宜兴复兴祖庭大觉寺，并捐建扬州鉴真图书馆、南京大学佛光楼，成立“扬州讲坛”。2002年，他迎请西安法门寺的佛指舍利到台湾供奉，促进了两岸佛教交流。2008年汶川大地震发生后，星云大师立刻在台湾发起募捐，其本人寺庙捐款1000万元用于抗震救灾。
2009年在江苏无锡举行的第二届世界佛教论坛上，星云大师发表言论称“台湾没有台湾人，台湾哪个不是中国人”。
他曾在接受传媒采访时说：“我一以贯之的心愿就是两岸和平。我想对祖国做出更大的贡献。”
During the second World Buddhist Forum in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, in 2009, Hsing Yun said that "all Taiwan people are Chinese".
Also, he said in earlier interviews that he always wants to make greater contributions to his motherland and see peaceful cross-Straits development. He also made clear that war will only leave unbearable consequences.

星云大师相信中国梦会使让国家更加强盛繁荣，他曾说，“中国地方这么大，人这么多，怎么样可以合作？团结起来成为一个拳头，有力量，那就是中国梦。”“两岸三地不要争论，团结起来才有力量，中国强就是中国梦。”
What's more, Hsing Yun had met with many Chinese leaders, which has shown the importance of his role in cross-Straits exchanges and development. Hsing Yun then said he believed that the pursuit of the Chinese dream will make the country stronger and more prosperous, and it's very inspiring.
在台湾，许多致力于促进两岸和平发展、反对“台独”的人都是星云大师的追随者。他是一位德高望重的僧人，更是一位心系祖国的圣人。朱松岭教授表示，星云大师的逝世是海峡两岸爱好和平人民的重大损失，他的教义将在未来持续影响着人们。
Many people who are dedicated to promoting peaceful cross-Straits development and stand against "Taiwan independence" in Taiwan are followers of Hsing Yun. Zhu said Hsing Yun's passing is a great loss to peace-loving people in both Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. His teachings will continue to influence people into the future.
星云大师一生弘扬人间佛教，力图把佛教遍传全球五大洲三十多个国家。在首席英文翻译妙光法师的帮助下，他在全球各地讲佛学，以智慧启迪众生，净化心灵。

Do you think things will be better by going to Pure Land?
极乐世界的人比我们娑婆世界的人更辛苦。
You might not realize that people live a harder life in Pure Land.
你们读《阿弥陀经》的人就知道，每天早上起来，要以鲜花供养十万亿十方诸佛，要很早，要做功课。
You will find evidence in the Amitabha Sutra where the heavenly beings in Western Pure Land have to wake up very early, and travel far distances to make offering of flowers. This is their daily practice.
供养过十方诸佛回来，你还以为能再睡回笼觉吗？不能。要念佛、念法、念僧。
After the traveling and offering, do you think you go back to bed? No, you have to go back to chanting the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha, you have to keep working.
要跟诸上善人相处，怎么样让诸上善人接受我们呢？
You have to constantly be the person of virtue. How do you do that?
我要有礼貌，我要勤劳，我要负责任。
You have to have manners, you have to be diligent, and you have to be responsible.
甚至吃过饭以后还要饭食经行，还要运动呢。
And then after eating a meal, you have to do walking meditation, you have to exercise.
那许多树木花草，你能不去浇水吗？
Then you have to tend to all the trees along the roads.
那些七宝楼阁，你能不保持它的清洁、干净、庄严美丽吗？
And then you have to maintain all these jewel pavilions by keeping them clean.
我的意思是，到了极乐世界一样的很辛苦。
What I'm trying to say is life in Pure Land would be just as hard.
你在这个世间上，养成了勤劳的习惯，念佛、念法、念僧，加以信仰，将来到了极乐世界，就会习惯了。
Therefore, what's more important right now is for you to begin by nurturing your nature of diligence in chanting the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha, and one day when you eventually arrive in Pure Land, everything would be easier.
